10 tips to Help Kids Enjoy Their Family Photoshoot
One of the most common questions parents ask before a family photoshoot is, “What if my child doesn’t cooperate?”
The good news is that children don’t need to sit still, smile perfectly, or follow instructions for us to create beautiful family photos. In fact, some of the best images happen when kids are simply being themselves.
Here are my top tips to help your little ones enjoy their family photoshoot.
1. Don’t Tell Them They Have to Smile
Children often feel pressure when they’re told to smile on command. Instead, let them know you’re going on a family adventure or spending time together. Natural smiles are always better than forced ones.
2. Avoid Bribes
While it can be tempting to promise ice cream or treats, this can sometimes become the focus of the session. Instead, keep the experience fun and let the rewards come as a surprise afterwards.
3. Let Them Be Themselves
Your child doesn’t need to sit perfectly still. Running, exploring, cuddling, laughing, and even being a little silly often create the most meaningful photographs.
4. Choose Comfortable Outfits
If children are uncomfortable, itchy, too hot, or constantly adjusting their clothes, they’ll have a harder time enjoying themselves. Choose outfits they feel comfortable wearing.
5. Bring Snacks
A small, non-messy snack can be a lifesaver for younger children. Hungry kids rarely want their photo taken.
6. Schedule Around Their Routine
Whenever possible, book your session at a time when your child is usually well-rested and fed. A tired toddler can turn even the most beautiful location into a challenge.
7. Keep Expectations Low
The less pressure everyone feels, the better. Your family photoshoot doesn’t need to be perfect to create beautiful memories.
8. Trust the Process
Children warm up at different speeds. Some are ready to go immediately, while others need a little time to feel comfortable. That’s completely normal.
9. Focus on Connection
Instead of looking at the camera the entire time, focus on your family. Hug your children, play games, tickle them, tell jokes, and enjoy the moment together.
10. Remember What You’re Really Capturing
Family photos aren’t about perfect behaviour. They’re about preserving this season of life exactly as it is. The missing teeth, the endless energy, the cuddles, and even the occasional cheeky grin are all part of your family’s story.
Final Thoughts
The best thing you can bring to your family photoshoot is a relaxed attitude. Children pick up on our energy, and when parents are enjoying themselves, kids usually do too.
My goal is never to create perfect photos. It’s to capture genuine moments and real connections that you’ll treasure for years to come.
